For the first time I felt like making some other pictures during the Tulip Festival in Orange City.

I sat pretty for three whole days at the Holland House Interiors on the main street of Orange City and signed my book. I signed a lot of books and improved my signature significantly ( which means I can sign faster and it is even less readable than before ). I met a lot of people I didn't see a long time. It was strange being in Orange City and not working on my project. Kind of bitter sweet. Saw a lot of faces I would have invite in my studio, if I would have met them a year ago. But I was happy to show my book and people were very kind to me.

Yes, I did borrow the signs from Dordt College:)

I will be opening my exhibition on Wednesday 18th at Dordt College. Also for the first time I will be doing book signing of my new book 'Promising Land - Land vol Beloften'. From 19 till 21th I will be at the Orange City Tulip Festival doing book signings. Exciting and happy times:)

Ground Zero firefighter dies of lung disease after battling toxic dust on 9/11

A week ago I went for the first time since 9/11 to a funeral again for a firefighter. Nine years after 9/11 people still die from the impact of the attack and collapse of the WTC. Since 2001 more than a thousand first responders have died from cancer and lung diseases related to toxic dust on Ground Zero. This came as a shock to me, I knew people were sick and some died, but not on this large scale. The death of William Quick, 55, of Long Island is a reminder of the struggle taking place mostly out of sight.

2-Alarm Fire in Bushwick

On Friday a building burned down a couple of blocks away. I always liked that building, it was empty as long as I can remember, but I always thought it could be fixed and make a great home. Not any more.

I embarked on the final leg in the journey to publish my project. From now on I am on strict schedule towards finishing the preparation for the printer. Last week my friend and colleague Ellen Kok helped me to make a first edit of my work. She was fair, but brutal:) This process is not for the faint-hearted, she killed some of my babies! Next week I will have a second edit by Robert Stevens, former photo editor-in-chief of Time Magazine and now teacher at the International Center of Photography (ICP).

I am happy to announce I have found two writers willing to write an introduction for my book. Jan Donkers, he was a famous radio host for 30 years for the VPRO radio and television, he is a writer and Americanist. Second, James Kennedy (born in Orange City, Iowa) is a writer and American historian. He is a professor at the University of Amsterdam.

Graphic designer Esther de Boer - Es & Zn in Amsterdam will design the book.

I will keep you posted on any progress.
